A degree qualified design engineer by trade, Darren picked up a camera again in 2007 re-energizing a childhood hobby, after deciding to do some traveling, something he wanted to do when he was younger, but life kind of got in the way. Self-taught but also guided by his longtime friend and professional commercial photographer Mike Harrington, he is forever developing his skills. After many extended breaks in Asia photographing cultural events, in 2010 he took the plunge, gave up his role as a design engineer and moved to Cambodia, the heart of Asia, where he could concentrate on his passion full time.
Photography was initially a tool to integrate and get close to the culture. The people of Asia, specifically Cambodia, were what drew him there, and it is this that he enjoys most. Over the years he has gained a great depth of knowledge about the culture and local area. What he enjoys is clients who enjoy the culture and loves to share his knowledge through photography.
Perhaps it’s his engineering background that led him to his latest obsession, time-lapse (check his work here), bringing time and motion to his work. Engineering certainly shows with his knowledge of photography. It is this latest development that Darren will strive to show Cambodia at its best. That combined with a love for the culture has got him where he is today, content with life in Asia.
All of what Darren does is about enjoying his hobby. If he can share that with others then that makes for a good day at the office. He is determined to keep things as they are so will not take on certain commercial work, as this would detract from the reason he is in Asia. Similarly, standard tours he will do, but enjoys more the challenge of getting that bit extra, which can make for an exciting trip, especially within Cambodia, where there are certain ways of achieving objectives.
An experienced professional photographer based in Siem Reap, Cambodia for over 10 years. Ota works with a Czech archaeological research team, documenting their work within the Angkor Park, while simultaneously gathering a wealth of history of the ancient empire.
Having had experience with film cameras from childhood, Ota became a photographer at the turn of the century while working with the Zlin Daily, taught by fellow journalists. He moved to Thailand for a short period. Ota then took a visa run to Cambodia in 2006 with the intention of photographing the magnificent temples and never permanently returned.
Being interested in history, Ota wanted to know more about these temples. By chance he met a Czech archaeologist from overhearing someone speaking his native language, and landed the job of documenting their findings.
Ota has good English and Czech, offers instructional tours for those who want to learn about their photography while visiting sacred sights, giving a unique insight into Angkorian history.
